BIOGRAPHY

Born in a small mining village in the south Wales valleys in the 1950's and after careers in the public, private and third sectors I am now a semi-retired, primarily self-taught emerging artist. I have worked collaboratively with an established professional artist.

I draw from the Celtic Monastic heritage in Wales, particularly their spirituality and love of creation. My work is very intuitive at the start and I don't usually have a subject which I then abstract. I am more about playful exploration of marks, colours etc until I find something that I can work with or I have a sense of what the painting is. It is more of an 'inside to outside' approach and brings with it the cumulative experiences of walking the landscape in which I live, favourite places, life and whatever is going on for me at the time. I keep working until I feel I need to stand back and review what's working, what's not and edit checking composition, colour, contrast, tone etc. The foundation of this approach is mark making, very loose and flowing.

I have been involved in solo and group exhibitions across South Wales over the last few years and a solo exhibition at the Senedd Cymru in 2018. I have also collaborated with other artists in Coastal Arts Trails in 2023 and 2024 and Studio exhibitions with other artists.

two of my works have been shortlisted for the Wales Contemporary 2025 exhibition at the Garrison Chapel, Chelsea Barracks, London until March 9th, 2025  and then the Waterfront Gallery, Milford Haven until May 17th, 2025

I am one of the founders of  the Y TÅ·  Celf - The Arthouse collective based in Llanelli which supports emerging artists and provides opportunities for the community to participate and explore their creativity.
